Read-A-Thon WINNERS!

The 403 Scholars won the 2010 Carrboro Elementary Read-A-Thon by reading an amazing 15, 232 minutes for the week. WOO HOO! Our prize was a gift certificate to the new local bookstore in Chapel Hill, Flyleaf Books. Some of the students and I spent an afternoon browsing their selection and choosing books with everyone's interests in mind.

Here's the link to Flyleaf Books: http://www.flyleafbooks.com

Lizzie, Anna, and Tallulah logged the most minutes read for the week. They came with me to choose all of our new books!

A big thank you goes out to Flyleaf Books.

The Scholars can't wait to start reading!

The Funniest Man On Earth!

This morning we saw a man named Al Simmons. He was REALLY funny! He made his bow tie wiggle and wrote his own rock song. Al created music with strings, tin cans, and straws. He could even play the banjo! Here is the link to his website.

Wax Museum

The 403 Scholars made their acting debut in the 3rd grade Wax Museum performance. Each Scholar chose a famous person, researched about his/her life, wrote a biography and a monologue, and then transformed into that person. Whew! It was a lot of hard work, but it all paid off. Enjoy watching and learning about famous people from the past and present!

Lizzie, Alize', Kaveh, Jeneice, and Ryan are featured in this video!

Check out this video for Kaw Khu, Xochi, Raven, Preston, and Maite.

The Kilometer AND Mile Walk

To get a feel for just how long a kilometer and mile is the 403 Scholars set out to walk Carrboro's track. We know that 6 laps equals one mile and that a little over 3 1/2 laps equals a kilometer. What a great way to get our exercise and discover math!

What a beautiful morning for a kilometer walk!

Tatha is recording an excellent score he earned on a KidBiz article.

It is obvious that Caleb is loving his book!

Jamir and Ler Moo bring their book about frogs and toads to life with 2 tree frogs!

Exploring The Deer Skeleton

In science, we are studying the human body. We started with the skeleton. We observed deer bones (because we didn't have any human bones) and took guesses as to what part of the body they came from. We described how they felt and looked. We loved wiggling the loose teeth on the skull!

Here's Noah taking notes about the vertebrae.

This group is comparing deer ribs to their ribs!

Watch out! Olivia is part deer!

Spotlight Student of the Month

Kaveh was voted by his classmates and teachers as the winner for the Spotlight Student of the Month Award. This month the focus was on courage and we all believe that Kaveh shows incredible bravery in how he handles situations at home and at school. The speaker at the breakfast was UNC's very own basketball player, Marcus Ginyard! How cool is that?!
