Multiplication Madness!

Hello 302 families! The Scholars are in full swing learning and memorizing their multiplication facts. Here are a few super fun websites where you can practice your facts!

Use IXL math at home! You can access it with the website below. Remember, your username is the first letter of your first name and your complete last name. Your password is carrboro. Here's an example with my name:

Username: ekochy

Password: carrboro

Want some exciting online multiplication games? Then definitely check out multiplication.com at http://multiplication.com/interactive_games.htm There you can complete Diaper Derby, compete in Cone Crazy, race against other people in Penguin Jump, plus much more!

You can also get to both of these sites from Useful Links on Carrboro Elementary's website. Enjoy!!!

Thermal Camera

We were lucky to have Henry's dad stop by and share his homemade thermal camera with us. The 302 Scholars waited patiently to have their photos taken and then checked out the thermal results! A huge thank you goes out to Mr. Schneider for sharing his cool (or should we say warm?) camera with us!

Where are the 302 Scholars?

We know it's been a while, but we've had a very busy month! Here are some picture updates to let you know what the 302 Scholars have been up to recently. Enjoy!

The 302 Scholars laid some "dead words" to rest on Halloween. We had a somber ceremony for some overused words complete with candlelight and gravestones. R.I.P said, very, like, good, and great!

Jyheim and Emily enjoy making Halloween bracelets!

Cayla, Hein, and Michael pause for a happy photo during our Halloween celebration!

A little rain has never stopped the Scholars from learning! Here they are learning about fire safety from the Carrboro Fire Department. (And staying warm in some firemans' jackets!)
Some 302 Scholars unite outside of school to cheer on the UNC Tar Heels!

Cooperative Juggling

In Ms. Kochy's 3rd grade class , we have learned how to play Cooperative Juggling. Cooperative Juggling uses the whole class. Ms. Kochy , the teacher starts with the ball. You throw the ball to one person across the room. That person is the person you will be throwing to for the rest of the game. You do not pick a person already thrown to. The person who you throw to will throw to a different person who will throw to another person. Everyone will get the ball. The last person will throw the ball to Ms. Kochy. Then , Ms. Kochy will start the pattern again . In the middle of the pattern , Ms. Kochy may start another pattern with another ball. There are 5 balls. Our goal is to cooperatively throw all 5 balls around the classroom. Here are some of our tips we think we need to do to achieve our goal:
  • Do not jerk the ball to your person you picked to throw to.
  • Throw underhand
  • When you get the ball , pause for a second , and then pass to the person you picked to throw to.
  • Do not make diving catches.
As you see , Cooperative Juggling is a very fun game . And remember , you get better every time.

Rounding Rap

The 302 Scholars have been learning all about rounding numbers. To help us remember we learned a rounding rap. Watch Cayla, Taniyah, Pan Myat San, and Nate T. rap about rounding!

Find the place value, circle that digit.
Move to the right and underline, get it?
Zero to four, circle stays the same.
Five to nine, add one is the game.
Now flex your muscles like a hero.
Digits to the right, change to zero.
All the other digits, stay the same.
Yo, you're a winner in the rounding game!
WORD!

Hispanic Heritage Month

Did you know that we are in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month? It began on September 15th and will end October 15th. The school is celebrating in many ways! Each class was assigned a country to research and learn about. The Scholars were given Paraguay. Lucky for us Mr. Diego, a 4th grade TA, is from Paraguay! He visited us last week and shared all there is to know about his home country.

As part of the celebrations there was a door decorating contest. Each class had to decorate their door with information about their country. The Scholars did a FABULOUS job! They all worked together and cooperated to make the best door in 3rd grade. We won first place in our grade! Check out all of the hard work below with the shiny blue ribbon we earned!

100% Smart!

The 302 Scholars discussed the different way that people are smart. We read the book How We Are Smart where we learned about 8 different types of smartness. Everyone has all 8 types of smartness, but in different amounts. The Scholars made graphs to show which areas they think they are the strongest in. We also discussed how the brain is like a muscle and that when we exercise our brain it gets bigger! Which type of smart is your strength?

-body smart
-music smart
-self smart

-people smart
-logic smart
-nature smart
-picture smart
-word smart

In How We Are Smart we read about people like Thurgood Marshall, Tito Puente, and Georgia O'Keefe. We learned that people are intelligent in different ways.

These graphs share the strengths of the 302 Scholars.

We know that the Scholars are all 100% smart!

Pajama Day!

Pajama day was a huge success! We loved seeing everyone's pjs and stuffed animals. We're getting close to filling in the pom-pom jar again. Can't wait to see what it will be next time!

The Skin We Live In

In keeping up with how we are a community, the Scholars discussed the different shades of our skin and how they are only a covering. We read a lot of awesome feel-good books about skin!

This was our favorite book that we read. It described skin as cocoa, mocha, almond, snow, sand, plus many more! Can you find an awesome description for your skin color?
This book talked about how our skin is just a covering and that to really know a person you have to get to know the INSIDE. We agreed! In this book we learned that skin isn't dumb, mean, smart, right, or wrong. We found that skin just holds the "you" that's inside.

We made our own faces to represent all of the shades of skin in our room. We discussed that no matter what shade we are, we have to get to know the person for what is inside them!

Community of the Scholars

Here's our awesome community! The first week of school we made a crossword, puzzle, and houses to show that we're a community. We are so proud of ourselves for being a community. We think our teachers are cool! Check out our WONDERFUL pictures!

This is one way that we show our community. We depend on each other.

This is Henry and Zach making their puzzle pieces.

Here we are working together to make the puzzle.

This is us around our puzzle.

This is our community puzzle We are interdependent because we depend on each other.

These are our community glyphs. They show information about us.

Welcome to 3rd Grade

Hello 302 Scholars, Families, and Friends! Welcome to our classroom blog. We will be posting videos, photos, links, and more to this site throughout the year! Be sure to check back regularly to keep up with what's going on inside the classroom. Also, please feel free to comment, we promise we'll reply! Take a look at these serious (and not so serious) scholars during the first week of school!

Look at those bright smiles!

We can already tell this is going to be SUCH a fun year! Can you figure out who has the floating leg up in the top row?

Meet the 3rd grade teachers: Ms. Gutierrez, Ms. Panzl, Miss Kochy, and Mrs. Moorman. Can you believe we all wore black and white on the first day of school? We didn't even plan it!

Birthday Week!

Last week was birthday week for room 403. Jack, Camden, and Aye Tar all turned 9 and hosted school celebrations for all the Scholars to help celebrate their birthdays. Here are a few photos from Jack's birthday celebration. A special thanks to his parents who brought the yummy (and Carolina blue) cupcakes!

Caleb, Kyrin, Shunte', and Jack all smile big for the camera!

Jack and Thein clearly enjoyed their cupcakes!

Function Machines

Despite our shortened Monday, the 403 Scholars had a big day! Before winter break they began to create their function machines. Function machines are imaginary machines that process numbers according to a certain rule. A number (input) is put into the machine, undergoes the rule, and is transformed into a second number (output). The Scholars put some of the Carrboro Staff to the test to see if they could figure out their function machine rules!

Rosie and Shunte' show off their function machines as they prepare for our visitors.

Timmeya listens closely as Mrs. Bivins whispers the rule of her function machine.

Miss Fisher recalls her multiplication facts in order to figure out Pema's rule.

Mrs. Rohner checks out Caleb's input numbers.

Alexandre listens closely as Mrs. Sharpless tries to figure out his rule.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by to support the 403 Scholars!

OK Go Video

While enjoying lunch in the classroom on Monday (and the early release) I shared with the Scholars this super fun music video by the band OK Go. They all loved the extremely incredible Rube Goldberg machine that lasted almost 4 minutes! Here it is for everyone's pleasure!
